Applesauce Cake

½ cup margarine or butter
1 ¼ cup sugar
2 eggs
2 cups sifted flour
1 ½ teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 Tablespoon cocoa
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
¼ teaspoon cloves
¼ teaspoon allspice
½ teaspoon cinnamon
1 ½ cup applesauce
¾ cup cut-up dates
1 cup raisins or currants

Beat the butter and sugar.  Add eggs and mix well. Sift flour with soda, salt, cocoa, and spices.  Add to mixture and combine.  Add applesauce and mix.  Add dates and raisins and combine.  Pour in greased loaf pan.

Bake 50 – 60 minutes at 325 degrees.

Option: Serve with whipped cream and sprinkle chopped nuts on top.
