This is our favorite cutout sugar cookie recipe for the holidays. The sugar cookies are soft (not dry) and have a wonderful nutmeg flavor.
1 1/3 cup butter
2 cup sugar
1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup dairy eggnog
4 cups all-purpose flour
Beat butter in large electric mixing bowl for 30 seconds. Add sugar, baking powder, nutmeg, and salt. Beat until well combined. Add eggs and eggnog and beat again until well combined. Beat in the flour. Divide the dough into four portions and cover and chill for about 2 hours or overnight.
Take out one portion of the dough from the refrigerator and roll the dough on a well-floured surface to ~ ¼ inch thickness. Be sure to flour the rolling pin also because the dough is moist. Use cookie cutters to cut desired shaped. Place cutouts ~ 1 inch apart on a lightly greased cookies sheet. Sprinkle cookies with favorite sugar or decorations. (Cookies can be decorated with frosting, if preferred, once they are cool.)
Bake at 375 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes until edges are firm and lightly browned. Leave on cookie sheet for ~ 2 minutes and transfer to wire rack to cool completely. Repeat with remaining dough. Makes approximately 6 dozen cookies.
